Friday, August 3, 6-9PM: Celebrate the neighborhood’s small businesses on Georgia Ave NW in Park View & Petworth! We will have drink, food and retail specials, live music, art and more.

MPD Third District 2018 National Night Out
Tuesday, August, 6PM-8PM: The Metropolitan Police Department is hosting a community night for citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials. Join us for games, food, and a moonbounce at Bruce Monroe Park (3000 Georgia Ave NW).

Poetry Slam for Social Justice
Thursday, August 9, 8PM-11PM: The public is invited to read original poetry about political, societal and justice themes at Busboys and Poets (14th & V St NW). Winners will have the opportunity to read their work on air at the DC Public Library’s radio show at The Line Hotel. Dwayne B. will host the slam.

Kids Ride Free (KRF) Card Distribution, Ward 1
Saturday, August 11, 9AM-2PM: Come get your new cards at the Columbia Heights Education Campus (3101 16th St NW). Students should bring their current DC One Card or a government-issued ID to get free transportation to school and school-related activities on Metrobus, Metrorail, and DC Circulator. New SmartTrip cards will be issued for School Year 2018-2019 in place of the previous DC One Cards.

Health & Wellness Back 2 School Festival
Saturday, August 18, 10AM-3PM: Parents and children can take advantage of free health screenings, family-friendly fitness demonstrations, workshops, healthy food tasting station, interactive games and a school supply giveaway just for students! Join the Greater Washington Urban League at the Columbia Heights Community Center (1480 Girard St NW).

The Color Club
Saturday, August 18, 4PM: Come join the fun and unwind at adult coloring at Mt. Pleasant Library (3160 16th St NW)! Free & open to the public. Materials provided. Email for more info.

MPD Third District Community Bicycle Ride
Sunday, August 19, 10AM-12PM: Everyone is welcome! There will be several stopping points along the way so feel free to join at any time. Remember to bring a helmet! We’ll start at 3D Police Station (1620 V St NW).

Columbia Heights Neighborhood Happy Hour
Wednesday, August 29, 5:30PM-7:30PM: Join us at DC Reynolds (3628 Georgia Ave NW) for another District Bridges and Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1A happy hour! Come hang out with us, make friends with your neighbors, learn how you can get involved, and meet ANC commissioners!

Help Improve Our Local Schools & Education SystemThere is still time to apply to become a PAVE Parent Leader in Education (PLE) Board for Ward 1! Founded in April 2016 with an all-parent governing board, PAVE is dedicated to creating an environment where the vision for education in DC is created with children and families, not for them. The Unity Healthcare Upper Cardozo Clinic (3020 14th St NW) has been selected for a community art installation! MuralsDC wants to capture aspects of the character, energy and history of the community in each of its murals during the concept design phase of the instillation. New Book Alert! Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth
The Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) Latino Youth Leadership Council presents a collection of graphic memoirs titled Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth. The book presents the experiences of 16 immigrant youth in their own words, told side-by-side in both Spanish and in English. Georgia Avenue Thrive is a volunteer-led non-profit making our neighborhood more connected, inclusive and vibrant. We advocate for the neighbors, businesses and visitors of Lower Georgia Avenue. We formed in 2015 as the Georgia Avenue/Lamont Street Public Safety Task Force, due to increased crime. After helping the community address these concerns, we broadened our efforts.
